AFCON 2023: Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi has deleted all posts on Instagram after being intense criticism by Nigerians following the country’s defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in Sunday’s AFCON 2023 final.
Nigeria suffered a 2-1 loss to Cote d’Ivoire at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe.
After the match, millions of Nigerian fans hurled abuse on the Fulham midfielder.
Iwobi was blamed for supposedly not doing enough to help the Super Eagles beat the AFCON 2023 hosts in Sunday’s final.
In a move believed to be a direct response to the social media abuse, the Fulham midfielder has deleted all but one video on his official account on the social media application.
The only video remaining is a video he shared ten weeks ago, while the comment section remains locked.
This is the second time in two years that Nigerians have targeted Iwobi after a major defeat.
In 2022, Iwobi was forced to delete all Super Eagles related content on his social media accounts after suffering backlash.
That time, he was blamed for his role in Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar after Ghana progressed on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Nigeria.
It is not clear whether Iwobi will retire or will continue playing for the Super Eagles.
