The members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are prepared to reconvene should the Speaker issue a recall order, as stated by Mahama Ayariga.

Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, has assured that Members of Parliament representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are fully prepared to reconvene in Parliament upon receiving a recall order from Speaker Alban Bagbin for parliamentary proceedings.

This assurance comes after Parliament was indefinitely adjourned on Tuesday, October 22, following a contentious session between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the majority status in the House.

During an interview on Accra-based Citi FM on October 23, Mr Ayariga emphasized the commitment of NDC MPs to fulfilling their legislative responsibilities despite the ongoing political tensions and divisions between the two parties. He underscored their willingness to promptly resume duties as directed by the Speaker.

The adjournment of Parliament ensued from sharp disagreements between the NDC and NPP regarding the majority side of the Chamber. According to Mr. Ayariga, the NPP was notably underrepresented during the session, with fewer than 30 members present. Furthermore, he criticized the actions of NPP MPs, implying that their disruption of proceedings was part of a broader plan led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Notwithstanding the political standoff, Ayariga reaffirmed the preparedness of NDC MPs to return to the Chamber upon the Speaker’s summons. He reiterated the party’s commitment to ensuring the smooth running of parliamentary business and fulfilling their legislative responsibilities for the benefit of the country.

“Many of them [the NPP MPs] are in their constituencies campaigning, and so anytime the Speaker calls us, we will come, and anytime the Speaker says we are the Minority, we will heed his directive, but he hasn’t made such a declaration,” Mr. Ayariga stated.
